Functional Medicine is time-tested, evidence-based system of healing that seeks to restore normal function in a patient for a return to robust health.
Functional Medicine, rather than targeting individual symptoms, focuses on the optimal functioning of the entire body and its organs. It addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach in partnership with understanding the conditions and history in which the disease manifested. Genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors all have a direct influence on long-term health and chronic health issues.
Functional Medicine practices tend to attract people frustrated by a lack of success with conventional medicine. Either, they were told there was no problem found or they were told the only solutions to their problems involve dangerous drugs and/or surgery. They may have even gone that route and not found success there.
In my practice people are listened to and respected, not told what they are feeling is “in their heads”. We work together to figure out the root cause of the dysfunction, and it may be far removed from what conventional wisdom suggests. We take into account emotional stresses, dietary stresses and possible hidden sources of inflammation. We then put a plan together based on laboratory assessments that will include positive lifestyle changes such as, healthy food choices, exercise suitable for your current level of fitness, improvements to sleep habits, and a plan to improve your ability to manage your day-to-day stress level.
My hope for my practice of Functional Medicine is that it will assist not only the chronically ill patient who finds me as a last resort but it will serve everyone who wants to be healthy. For prevention, early treatment, for kids, for people who want to lose weight but aren’t sick in any way, for people that just want to run faster or lift more weights, i.e. expanding our definition so we can work with people yes, with chronic illness but also with people before that stage occurs.
The Kalish Method
The Kalish Method is a functional medicine lab-based health approach focused on addressing five common conditions – weight gain, fatigue, depression, female hormone and digestive problems – through restoring the 3 main body systems: hormones, digestion and detoxification.
